Stone Corral Lookout is a decomissioned fire lookout location. Road is rough and steep and takes some time to get here. It's about 23 miles from the town of Smith River.

Driving directions:

  • Drive to Smith River, CA
  • 41.9295, -124.1432: Turn northeast onto Rowdy Creek Rd, off Hwy 101.
  • Drive past the Del Norte Rod and Gun club on your left, and begin the ascent.
  • Proceed on the county road going ever up and east.
  • The part going up is a steep grade.
  • 41.9191, -124.0528: Keep left and it becomes Low Divide Road.
  • This is the turnoff to High Divide, CN71xv48, and much farther Myrtle Creek CN71xv31.
  • 41.9109, -124.0312: Keep left and stay on Low Divide Road (not FS 17N49).
  • This is the turnoff to Low Divide Pit, CN71xv92.
  • Or continue north about a mile to Stone Corral.
  • 41.92730, -124.01956: Turn right onto a short rough trail and go up in 4x4 drive.
  • 41.92778, -124.01863: At top of this trail is the remains of Stone Corral Lookout.

Low Divide Pit is an old mine tailing pit with easy access. Road is rough and steep so takes some time to get here, but easy to do in any vehicle while paying attention.

Crissey Field Rec Site 1

Don't go: the CN71-CN72 grid line is gated off. A sign says "Authorized Personnel Only" at the entrance to the stub road. You can try operating from the Visitor Center parking lot. However this is a popular place and very busy in the summer.

The Point St George parking lot is about about as far west as you can go in California. It's about fifty feet above sea level. Good distance away from the hills so take-off angle is pretty good. On 144 I have worked to Portland and down to Sacramento area with 150 watts and 12 elements, however mostly to big gun stations. - 2008 W7KLK

Driving directions:
From Crescent City, take W Washington Blvd toward the airport.
Continue straight on N Pebble Beach Dr to the end.
